12 JUNE - WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR

Every 12 June, Education International (EI) and its member organisations worldwide celebrate the World Day against Child Labour. It is an occasion to highlight the global extent of child labour and raise awareness on the situation of millions of children, girls and boys, working across the globe.

It is also an opportunity for us to make our students aware of problems of the global world. Thus, this year I have prepared a short video for them: Freedom from Child Labour.

We have had a debate about this issue in the classroom and, later, I have asked my students to create a virtual poster answering to the question "What can be done to end child labour?".

8 MARCH - INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
ANDALUSIAN WOMEN WITH HISTORY

In order to commemorate the International Women's Day, on March, 8, we have decided that students will choose a famous and important Andalusian womam and will create Infographics about them which will be shared in the school walls and blog.

I provided them with a list of relevant Andalusian women that they could choose:

That way, they can learn more about the Andalusian culture at the same time they are working on their creativity.

AMERICAN SUPER BOWL

As you already know, in this Unit my students are creating their own cities. One of the tasks is to include a festivity, so today I've talked about the American Super Bowl.

As they have to create their own festivity for their cities, they will be given an example: The Super Bowl Day. I have created an infographic with the most interesting facts about this celebration of the US:

Then, they will have to invent their own festivities and, at home, they will write a composition talking about a celebration we have in Andalusia, because I also want them to value the Andalusian culture.

Today we are celebrating our own Valentine's Day. I wanted to do something special with my students, so I prepared a Bingo for them with Valentine's Day vocabulary.

They played in 10 different groups. I said one of the words we have already studied and associated with a picture and then they played Bingo. Here you have the activity and the vocabulary we used:

30 JANUARY - SCHOOL DAY FOR PEACE AND NON-VIOLENCE

Today, we celebrate the School Day for Peace and Non-Violence and, in the English classroom, we also wanted to do something to promote these necessary and important values among the students.

Then, I decided to read some poems about peace. Later, students created their own poems expressing their feelings and views about this issue.

I have chosen 3 poems from a collection of poetry created by the students from Alachua County Schools, Florida. They contain the winning poetry from the second annual Alachua County Peace Poetry Contest. You can find all the poems here.

The poems I have chosen are the following:

What if the World Was Peaceful?

What if we could live a life with no wars?

What if our nation had no battle scars?

The nation could hold peace in a big glass jar.

What if we did good deeds for each other?

What if we helped the fallen rise again?

With that, we wouldn’t have war to bother.

As you see, I ask for not much, just a little.

Why can’t we live in peace, I ask all day.

‘Cause if we did, the world wouldn’t be cold and brittle.

OLD NEWSPAPER READING COMPREHENSION

In Unit 6, we are studying the media and the past tenses.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Nothing shows some Christmas love better than a stack of greeting cards!

I have shown my students samples of greetings cards as well as some typical phrases or saying that can be found on them in English. Then, they have created their own cards for friends or family members, or even for other students in the class. They have used a webpage called Postermywall (here you have the link to it: Postermywall) so they can share their virtual card in the medias or send them to their beloved ones.

16 DECEMBER - DAY OF READING IN ANDALUSIA

Hi everyone! 16 December we celebrate the Day of Reading in Andalusia. It is a beautiful day to celebrate the importance of reading and to remember the most significant authors of our culture. In the English class, we can also carry out different activities related to this event.

This time, I decided to work with my students on a fragment of Washington's Irving Tales of the Alhambra. I gave them a worksheet to introduce the topic, and then the different scenes of the tale. After reading it together, students, in groups, interpreted the different scenes for the rest of the class. It was very funny. Here I show you the activities:

TALES OF THE ALHAMBRA - WASHINGTON IRVING

My name is Washington Irving. I was born in New York in 1783.

I am an American author, essayist, biographer, historian and diplomat. I am best known for my short stories The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle and Tales of the Alhambra. I also wrote the biography of George Washington.

I travelled to Spain in 1826 and became attached at the US embassy in Madrid. While in Spain, I researched for my biography of Christopher Columbys and mi works on Granada and the Alhambra. Then, I wrote Tales of the Alhambra in 1832.

When I saw Granada for the first time, I described it as "the most picturesque and beautiful city, situated in one of the loveliest landscapes I have ever seen".

Immediately, I asked the governor permission to visit the Alhambra's Palace. A 35-years old guide called Mateo Xiemnes helped me. This experiene inspired me to write Tales of the Alhambra.

Now, we are just at the Square of the Cisterns (Plaza de los Aljibes). This is the exact place where my tale The Moor's Legacy begins. I will be silent now! Enjoy the tale!

6 DECEMBER - DAY OF THE SPANISH CONSTITUTION

On December 6, we commemorate the day of our Constitution in Spain, so I though it was a good opportunity to explain my students something about the Constitution in Britain as well as in the United States.

After introducing the topic in class, students used computers to look up information about this important document in both English-speaking countries. After doing that, they answered some questions in a quiz that I prepared with the web Plickers. Finally, we discussed in class the differences and similarities between Britain and the United States' Constitutions and ours. It was very interesting!

THANKSGIVING: WHAT IS IT?

Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in America every year on the fourth Thursday in November. Many people use it as a day to reflect on the positive things in life and spend time with their families. Nearly everyone in America gets one or two days off school or work, and this celebration marks the beginning of the Christmas holiday season.

It is very important that we bring British and American culture closer to our students, so explaining something about this celebration can be very interesting.

25 NOVEMBER - INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Hi everyone! As you already know, today, 25 November, is the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women. This is a very remarkable day and we should include some special activities in our classroom to discuss the topic and make our students aware of this event.

In our school, this year we are celebrating a demonstration against gender violence, where everyone is wearing a T-shirt with a slogan denouncing this situation.

In the English classroom, we have created our own T-shirt with the messages, of course, in English.

But before starting with the creative part, I made my students a question: What happens when you put a boy in front of a girl and ask him to slap her?

We brainstormed together for a while, and then I showed them a short: "Slap her": Children's reactions.

After a little debate about the short, we started creating our slogans. Here is my example:

22 NOVEMBER - DAY OF THE ANDALUSIAN GYPSY PEOPLE

It is very important that students appreciate their culture and share it with the rest of the world. For the 22 November, the Day of the Andalusian Gypsy People, students are going to prepare a video in which they explain what is flamenco and why it is so important in our culture. Here you have the one I prepared to introduce the activity. Hope you like it!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Bringin our students closer to the culture and history of the countries where English is spoken is as important as teaching them vocabulary or grammar. Therefore, today we have been working on Halloween, of course. First of all, I showed my students a video about the origins of Halloween, and then we did a Quizizz to check their understanding.

As you may have heard in the news o read in the newspapers, Brexit is already a reality. For that reason, I decided to dedicate some time in the class to talk about this issue with my students.

First of all, we watched a short explanatory video to clarify all Brexit's aspects. After that, we raised the debate: What do you think about this situation? Is it Brexit benefitial for the UK? And for the rest of Europe?
